Kolbe Academy Course Plan Samples

Methodology of Syllabi,
Course Plans & Study Guides

Kolbe course plans, syllabi, and study guides are designed to give families a clear path through each course, providing structure, assignments, discussion support, and assessment guidance within a faithful Catholic, classical course of study.

Why Kolbe Developed Course Plans

Beginning in 2003, Kolbe began a major overhaul of its syllabi and course plans while adding study guides across the curriculum. Earlier course plans were more rudimentary, offering a destination but not always a clear map for how to get there.

As Catholic homeschooling grew, Kolbe recognized the need to give parents more direction, structure, and support while still honoring their role as the primary educators of their children.

Four Stages of Intellectual Development

Kolbe’s curriculum components help guide students through four stages of intellectual development:

  1. Understanding what is read
  2. Retention of explicit information
  3. Recognition of implicit concepts
  4. Making connections and moving toward mastery

Syllabi & Course Plans

Kolbe syllabi and course plans serve as road maps through the first, third, and fourth stages of intellectual development. They provide parent-teachers and students with key points for understanding, help students make connections across subjects and to the Catholic Faith, and include discussion questions, paper topics, and exams designed to support deeper learning.

Study Guides

Kolbe study guides help students slow down, notice important details, and return to key ideas often enough to remember them. This repeated work is not busywork; it prepares students to discuss, write about, and understand the material more fully.
